DLF IPL T20- Rajasthan beat Delhi by 6 wkts

Opener Rahul Dravid Johan Botha in with useful contributions as Rajasthan Royals [ registered a comprehensive six-wicket victory over Delhi Daredevils in the Indian Premier League match at the Sawai Mansingh stadium, in Jaipur , on Tuesday.

Scorecard Click here

After restricting Delhi to 151 for six, Rajasthan overhauled the target with nine balls to spare, and handed Daredevils their second consecutive defeat in the league.

Dravid (38) hit six fours and a six in his 31-ball stay, while Botha produced an unbeaten 39 off 32 deliveries.

With 11 runs required from the last two overs, New Zealander Ross Taylor (18) cracked a four off Ashok Dinda and then hit him for a huge six over the midwicket boundary.

Hosts Rajasthan ended up with 152 for four in 18.3 overs.

Chasing a stiff target, Dravid (38) started proceedings on an aggressive note and 26 runs came in the first three overs.

Dravid hit two fours off Dinda in the third over to make his intention clear. But Dinda soon got his act together and disturbed Amit Paunikar's stumps with a fullish delivery.

Sehwag introduced Irfan Pathan in the fourth over and Dravid gave him for special treatment, clobbering him for two fours and a six to accumulate 15 runs.

Next change van der Merwe also got the same treatment as both Dravid and Botha, who came to the crease after the dismissal of Paunikar, hit him for three fours to take the home team's score past 50 in 5.3 overs.

But ven der Merwe soon took his revenge in the form of Dravid's wicket, who was caught by wicketkeeper Naman Ojha while trying to slice the ball towards point.

Local boy Ashok Maneria (22) teamed up with Botha as both kept the scorebord tickling with occasional boundaries.

Maneria was more aggressive of the two as he clobbered van der Merwe for two sixes in the 10th over to bring the asking rate under eight runs per over.

Pathan, who hardly looked threatening in his first spell, was again bought back into the attack by Sehwag, and he responded by accounting for Maneria's wicket.

It was a short of length delivery outside off and Menaria punched it straight to Sehwag at short extra cover.

Ajinkya Rahane (18), who was included in the playing eleven in place of Stuart Binny, hit Pathan for a six to take the team's total past 100-run mark in 12.1 overs.

Morkel accounted for Rahane's wicket in the 16th over as the right-hander went for an ugly across-the-line hook.

Botha and Taylor then took Rajasthan home without any further damage.

For Delhi Dinda, Morkel, Pathan, Merwe got a wicket each.

Earlier, opener David Warner and Venugopal Rao hit brisk half-centuries to rescue Delhi Daredevils after a dismal start and steer them to a fighting total.

Warner (54) and Rao (60) put on an 83-run partnership for the fifth wicket as Daredevils rallied from 29 for two in five overs and 36 for four in eight to cross the 100-run mark.

Warner struck six fours and a six in his 44-ball innings, while Rao hit four fours and as many sixes during his 40-ball stay to lift Delhi from a precarious position.

Earlier, electing to bat, Daredevils were off to a dismal start, losing two wickets in the form of skipper Virender Sehwag (4) and Aaron Finch (11) inside the first six overs.

Sehwag's decision to bat on a placid Jaipur track backfired as Rajasthan's Australian import Shaun Tait struck early to leave the visitors reeling at 30 for 2 in six overs.

Tait, who replaced injured New Zealander Jacob Oram in the side, dismissed the dangerous Sehwag in his first over.

The India opener, who hit Tait for four through cover point off his second delivery, created room for himself the very next delivery only to edge the ball, which Dravid pouched effortlessly at first slip.

Next man-in, Finch, hit the first six of Delhi innings when he clobbered South African spinner Johan Botha over wide midwicket in the third over to somewhat break the deadlock.

But his exploits soon came to an end as the Australian responded late to a bouncer from Tait, and lobbed a simple catch to Botha at mid-on.

The experienced speedster mixed aggression with pace as he used the windy conditions to devastating effect.

Skipper Warne introduced himself in the eighth over and spun a web around Delhi's batsmen as he dismissed Unmukt Chand (2) and Naman Ojha (0) in quick succession.

Warner and Rao then came together and did the repair work, taking the score past the 50-run mark in 10.4 overs.

They steadied the Delhi team, which started the tournament with a big defeat to Mumbai Indians .

Warner reached his half century off 40 balls, while Rao was a little quicker, requiring 37 balls.

After Warner departed, caught by Abhishek Raut off pacer Amit Singh in the 18th over, Rao punished the Rajasthan bowlers, especially Siddharth Trivedi , clobbering him for two huge sixes.

But Trivedi had the last laugh as Rao was caught by Warne at deep midwicket off Trivedi's slower one.

Irfan Pathan (9) hit Tait for two consecutive fours in the last over to take Delhi past the 150 mark.

Besides Tait and Warne, Amit Singh and Siddharth Trivedi bagged a wicket each.

DLF IPL T20-Kolkata Knight Riders vs Deccan Chargers

KKR beat Deccan by 9 runs

Scorecard Click here

Kolkata Knight Riders defeated Deccan Chargers by nine runs in an Indian Premier League match in Eden Gardens on Monday.

Chasing Knight Riders 163 for four, Deccan lost wickets at heap in the beginning and towards the fag end of their innings to eventually fell short by just nine runs.

Jacques Kallis produced a fluent half-century to set the platform for middle-order to take charge and help Kolkata Knight Riders post a challenging 163 for four.

Opting to bat, Kallis (53 off 45) and Manvinder Bisla (19) gave a solid start to the Knight Riders innings with a 51-run opening partnership.

Kallis was at his destructive best as he hit seven fours and a lone six to notch up his second fifty in as many matches
in the tournament.

After Kallis' show, Manoj Tiwary played a special unbeaten knock of 30 from 21 balls during which struck two boundaries and as many sixes.

Knight Riders captain Gautam Gambhir (29 off 18) also played a good hand while Yusuf Pathan produced a nice 15-ball
22-run cameo towards the end to provide the late surge for the hosts, who piled up 45 runs in the last five overs.

For Deccan leg-spinner Amit Mishra impressed with figures of four for 19, including the prized scalp of Gambhir.

Playing their first home match without former India captain and local hero Sourav Ganguly , the Knight Riders started the proceedings in an attacking manner in front of a half-filled Eden Gardens.

Kallis clobbered his South African teammate Dale Steyn for two fours in the very first over of the innings.

To add to Deccan's misery, Bisla was dropped on five by Ishant Sharma at third man from Steyn's bowling. While bowling Ishant was expensive today, giving away 27 runs from his spell of three overs as Knight Riders raced to 34 for no loss in five overs.

Introduction of spin from the sixth over brought down the run rate as Mishra was successful in breaking the opening
partnership, trapping Bisla for 19.

Mishra gave away three runs from his first over, while Pragyan Ojha too was tidy as the duo managed to stem the
Knight Riders run flow. But poor fielding did not help Deccan's cause as an attacking Kallis ensured that the Knight Riders remained on course for a challenging total.

Sangakkara brought on JP Duminy in the 13th over that yielded the surprise wicket of Kallis. In no mood to relent against his South African teammate, Kallis pulled one over midwicket for a six but only to be holed out to Shikhar Dhawan in the next ball.

Coming at number three, Gambhir was watchful to start with but later in Tiwary's company the duo played attacking
shots to up the run rate.

Aided by some sloppy fielding, the duo scored in excess of 10 an over as they raced to 118 for two in 15 overs.

Looking to play inside out, Gambhir was bowled by Mishra to put brakes on the 43-run third-wicket partnership that came
off just 26 balls.

Pathan then joined Tiwary and took Steyn's for a ride, hitting the pacer for three boundaries before getting out in the last ball of the innings.

DLF IPL4 T20-Kings XI Punjab vs Pune Warriors

Pune Warriors won by 7 wkts

Man of the match: S Wagh

Scorecard click here

Debutants Pune Warriors commenced their Indian Premier League campaign with a resounding seven-wicket victory over Kings XI Punjab at their home venue -- the D Y Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai on Sunday.

The Pune outfit owned by Sahara and led by India's World Cup hero Yuvraj Singh dished out a clinical all-round display to surge to a convincing win with 6.5 overs to spare.

They first restricted Kings XI to 112 for eight, after having left the visitors tottering at 45 for six, and then chased the target with a degree off comfort on the bouncy track.

The run-chase was put on course by a 60-run second wicket stand between Jesse Ryder (31 off 17 balls) and Mithun Manhas (35 in 32 balls) after a first-ball dismissal of Graeme Smith.

Then Robin Uthappa (22 not out in 14 balls) and Yuvraj (21 not out in 15 balls) put on an unbroken stand of 45 runs for the fourth wicket to complete the job in style, both clobbering sixes towards the end.

The Punjab outfit will meet last year's winners Chennai Super Kings at home in Mohali on April 13 and on the same day Pune Warriors will clash against the other new franchise Kochi Tuskers Kerala in Navi Mumbai.

Earlier, a double strike each by Pune's opening bowlers Alfonso Thomas and Shrikant Wagh left Punjab staggering at nine for four within the first four overs.

The top four batsmen, including former Australian great Gilchrist, were packed off cheaply by South African Thomas and Wagh and only a late charge by another South African, Ryan McLaren who made a half century, propelled Punjab past the century mark.

All-rounder McLaren made an unbeaten 51 in 43 balls with six fours and a six after coming in at number seven, besides putting on 35 runs in 52 balls with fellow left-hander Piyush Chawla (15), who was the second-highest scorer.

For Pune, 22-year-old Vidarbha left arm seamer Wagh finished with impressive figures of three for 16 while 34-year-old Cape Town-born Thomas picked up two for 27.

Pune started the run-chase on a dismal note by losing opener Smith in the first ball. The South African captain drove Praveen Kumar's first ball straight into the hands of short cover fielder McLaren.

But any hopes of a collapse like Punjab's did not happen as Ryder and Manhas batted in a forthright manner to put on 60 runs for the second wicket in 46 balls to put their side well on way to the victory target.

New Zealander Ryder set the tone for the partnership with a slash and stunning straight drive for four off McLaren while Manhas swung leg spinner Piyush Chawla for a four and then smacked him over extra cover for a six in his first over.

Manhas then slashed McLaren for a four to raise the 50 of the innings in 39 balls before the partnership was broken by Nayar, who had the former caught behind chasing a wide ball.

Ryder left eight runs later when his attempted pull off McLaren ended up behind the wicket to raise some hopes of a Punjab fight-back.

Uthappa was let off by Rimmington at deep extra cover off Nayar, a straight forward catch, five runs later.

Yuvraj too was let off on eight at slip off Nayar at the team score of 82 for three and using these largesse the two hard-hitting batsmen ended the match with their unfinished partnership.

Uthappa struck two sixes and a four while Yuvraj hit one six as they remained unconquered at the end.

Earlier, Kings XI made a poor start by losing both their openers inside the first two overs and then their number three and four batsmen within the space of 21 balls.

First to go was captain Gilchrist. Having played very little competitive cricket between the last IPL and the current one barring a stint with Engish country Middlesex, he feathered a catch to wicket-keeper Robin Uthappa while attempting to pull speedster Thomas off the fourth ball.

His opening partner and countryman Shaun Marsh was the next to depart, flicking left-arm seamer Shrikant Wagh to Rahul Sharma at fine leg in the second over to leave the team tottering at five for the loss of two wickets.

Worse was to follow when Paul Valthaty was caught at point off Alfonso by Ryder after having cover-driven the 34-year-old South African right-arm bowler for a four and then Dinesh Kartik slashed Wagh straight to Sharma at third man.

The top four Punjab batsmen had been cleaned out by their rival opening bowlers with only nine on board in 21 balls.

There was a brief recovery through Sunny Singh and Abhishek Nayar , who escaped when he was caught off a no ball off Murali Kartik, but the former was hopelessly run out for 12 almost immediately following a bad mix-up with his left-handed partner.

At this stage Punjab were tottering at 36 for five which became 45 for six a little later when Nayar was caught at backward point driving at a wide one from Ryder.

The stand between McLaren, who also struck a huge six over the mid wicket area of compatriot Thomas in the penultimate over, and Chawla helped Punjab from being bowled out as well as cross the 100-run mark.

DLF IPL4 4th T20-Mumbai Indians beat Delhi Daredevils by 8 wkts

I
t will be a clash of titans at the Feroz Shah Kotla when Sachin Tendulkar's Mumbai Indians take on Delhi Daredevils led by Virender Sehwag on Sunday.

Complete Scorecard

There are enough ingredients for a mouthwatering contest as two of the biggest names in Indian cricket will be out to prove their supremacy.

Mumbai Indians, who were the finalists last year, are easily the favourites on paper with Tendulkar, Kieron Pollard, Andrew Symonds ready to take any attack to the cleaners with their murderous approach.

For Delhi Daredevils, which lost as many as seven (Gautam Gambhir, AB de Villiers, Ashish Nehra, Pradeep Sangwan, Daniel Vettori, Mithun Manhas, Rajat Bhatia) of their key players, it will be a real challenge to do well with a set-up that neither consists of any big international names nor an Indian player of repute save the skipper and South African speedster Morne Morkel.

The team consists of mainly India discards and fringe players who are trying to claw their way back into the national team.

Therefore, Sehwag certainly won't have the cushion that Tendulkar will have in his team.

Sachin shed 'happy tears

There was no 100th century milestone for Sachin Tendulkar on Saturday but the Little Master did not care as he shed "happy tears" after finally getting his hands on the World Cup at the sixth time of asking.

A billion Indians had anticipated Tendulkar, the world's most prolific run scorer, would collect a century of international centuries in the showpiece match but that dream was shattered when he was dismissed for 18.

A ghostly silence had descended on his home ground of Wankhede Stadium after Lasith Malinga tempted him with a vicious outswinger which Tendulkar edged behind for Kumar Sangakkara to complete a low diving catch.

Bat tucked under his arm, Mumbai's favourite son trudged back to the pavilion as the 33,000 fans suddenly lost their collective voice, scarcely believing what they had just witnessed.

But three hours later, Tendulkar's rare failure with the bat was all but forgotten as captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni clobbered a six over long on to trigger wild celebrations up and down the country.

INDIA ARE WORLD CHAMPIONS

Team India have won the ICC Cricket World Cup after 28 years, completing the highest ever run chase in a final.

Score Card Click here

India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni and Gautam Gambhir pulled off an impressive run chase to beat Sri Lanka by six wickets in the ICC Cricket World Cup final in Mumbai.

The fourth-wicket pair ensured India did not panic in front of a capacity home crowd after the early loss of big guns Virender Sehwag and Sachin Tendulkar in pursuit of 274 for six.

The favourites prevailed with 10 balls to spare in today's showpiece between sub-Continental neighbours, both seeking their second World Cup, despite a wonderful 103 not out from Sri Lanka's Mahela Jayawardene.

The expectations of many were that this contest might be a tale of two champion players, at watershed moments in their record-breaking careers.

But there was no major impact for Sri Lanka's Muttiah Muralitharan on his last appearance for his country, or a 100th international hundred for India's Tendulkar in his home town.

Instead, with 97 for Gambhir and Jayawardene's third World Cup century, three other world-class performers took centre stage in a contest just shaded by India.

It was Dhoni (91no) who completed the job, after promoting himself to number five and producing his first half-century of the campaign in a telling stand of 106 with Gambhir and then an unbroken 54 with Yuvraj Singh.

He did it with crowd-delighting gusto too, smashing a six high over long-on off Nuwan Kulasekera for the winning runs.

After Lasith Malinga uprooted both India openers - Tendulkar's departure silenced the partisan majority - India's prospects of a successful chase appeared to be fading already under the Wankhede Stadium lights.

But first Gambhir, with nine fours from 122 balls, and then Dhoni's eight fours and two sixes from only 79 changed everything.

Sehwag was gone lbw for nought to only the second ball when he aimed across the line and missed.

There was to be no finest hour for Tendulkar either, and it seemed a crushing setback to Indian morale when he edged behind.

Gambhir and Virat Kohli responded with a partnership of 83, broken only by an outstanding return catch from Tillakaratne Dilshan, diving to his right to pluck out the one-handed chance.

Gambhir had two moments of fortune, Kulasekera unable to hold a tumbling catch at long-off in the first over of spin from Suraj Randiv with the left-hander on 30 - and then, 18 runs later, a scampered second run just made as Kumar Sangakkara marginally fumbled a throw from the deep.

Sangakkara could not quite gather either when there was barely a half-chance to stump Dhoni for a second-ball duck off Dilshan, and the India captain was to have another close call on 69 when Chamara Kapugedera threw down the stumps.

But his and Gambhir's efforts, with Yuvraj's late assistance after the number three had been bowled trying to carve off-side runs off Thisara Perera, met the challenge.

That might not have been so had Sri Lanka's batsmen begun the match a little less conservatively, after Sangakkara won the toss on a good pitch and Zaheer Khan kept the brakes on with a miserly new-ball spell of 5-3-6-1.

Jayawardene's was the key wicket almost from the moment he reached the crease, and certainly after India broke the first of his three half-century stands - with Sangakkara.

Sri Lanka's lynchpin established a near risk-free run-a-ball tempo and retained it throughout.

Zaheer's outstanding control in his opening spell, backed up by impressive fielding in the off-side ring, had put the early squeeze on Sri Lanka's previously prolific opening pair Dilshan and Upul Tharanga.

The left-hander succumbed to the first delivery of Zaheer's fourth over when a touch of movement away off the pitch took an outside edge and was very well-caught by Sehwag, away to his right at first slip.

Tharanga's two runs had eaten up 20 balls, and it was not until his 20th delivery that Zaheer conceded his first run.

The introduction of Harbhajan Singh soon did for Dilshan, unluckily bowled off glove and pad as he tried to sweep.

Jayawardene joined Sangakkara for a partnership of 62, ended when the captain went after a short ball from Yuvraj only to edge it behind.

Thilan Samaraweera helped Jayawardene put on another 57.

Yet once again, just when Sri Lanka were just starting to look well-placed, Samaraweera was lbw sweeping at Yuvraj.

Kapugedera poked a very good slower ball from the returning Zaheer straight to cover to go for only a single.

Two wickets had gone for three runs - a test of resolve and skill even for Jayawardene.

But he found another willing and able partner in Kulasekara, who helped to rotate the strike and keep wickets intact for the final powerplay push - in which Sri Lanka's best-of-the-tournament 63 runs were plundered.

Jayawardene completed a richly-deserved century with the last of his 13 fours over wide mid-off as even Zaheer started to suffer.

He perhaps deserved too to finish the day a winner. But India were narrowly the superior side, and eventually proved the point.
